THE NAME
According to Greek Mythology, Athena (Goddess of Wisdom) was fighting with Poseidon (God of the Sea) over who would rule a new city. As a bonus, the city would be named after the God/Goddess who was able to provide the people of the city with the best gift. Personally I’m easily won over with pizza or tacos. Poseidon struck a rock with his trident, creating a salt water spring.
BOOOOOO!!
Athena came through ready to win. She hit a rock and made an olive tree. This was an offering symbolizing fruitfulness and peace. The people of this unnamed city were more impressed with a tree than water and eventually named the city Athens.
